DIPLOMA PROGRAM

COURSE PROGRAM

The Diploma Program is a two year program that starts at the beginning of grade 11 and is completed at the end of grade 12.  Students completing the IB Diploma Program will also fulfil requirements for a BC Dogwood graduation diploma.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (DP) is made up of the Diploma Program core and six subject groups.

The three Diploma Program core is comprised of:
  • The Theory of Knowledge (TOK)--a course that has students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
  • The Extended Essay (EE)--an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)--an independent or collaborative enterprise where students complete a project related to these three concepts.
Students must select 6 subjects one from each of the following subject categories: 1) Studies in Language and Literature, 2) Language Acquisition, 3) Individuals and Societies, 4) Sciences, 5) Mathematics, 6) The Arts.

Students must take 3 subjects at a Higher Level (HL) and 3 subjects at a Standard Level (SL)

Parkland will be offering the following subjects:

Students who do not want to complete the full Diploma Program (http://ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/) are able to chose one or more of the IB courses to take along side their BC courses.  This option is ideal for students who wish to pursue some of the other electives that Parkland offers while still being able to take individual IB courses.

Upon completion of individual IB courses students will receive a certificate from IB international indicating which IB courses were completed.
Students taking any Higher Level (HL) IB Courses can earn Post-Secondary Credits for Universities across Canada and the world.

I will sign up for IB in grade 11 because I'm interested in achieving a higher level of education and would like to have a more in-depth type of learning experience.

I'm excited about the IB.  I'm looking forward to working independently in a more self-directed manner on my own learning.  I like that so many of the Parkland teachers seem excited about it too!
